The Fantom Penguin has learned that state and federal governments face lawsuits over the use of aerosol-spraying aircraft without the proper permits and that these lawsuits will be filed within the next sixty days. There's even a chance these cases will be filed locally, in the Redding area.

EPA Vague about How Much Public Interest Constitutes “Enough”
The Fantom Penguin has obtained a copy
of a letter sent to EPA Region 9 by Citizens for Clean Air:
75 Hawthorne Street, 12th Floor San Francisco, CA 94105
415-972-3174
Email: lueders.jesse@epa.gov
Re: DEADLINE for
requests: July 31, 2016
Dear Presiding Administrative
Officer Jesse Lueders,
- Has EPA Region 9 contacted local stakeholders via mail? How many have been contacted?
- Has EPA Region 9 placed notices in any local newspapers detailing the permit modification?
- What threshold do citizens have to meet in order to trigger a public hearing?
- Will we receive the threshold requirements prior
to the end of the July 31, deadline?
.Please
grant everyone a public hearing regarding the Collins Pine Company
PSD permit modification to install and operate a dry electrostatic
precipitator (ESP) to replace the facility’s current wet ESP.
Citizens For Clean Air formally
requests both a public hearing and an EXTENSION of the July 31,
2016 deadline. Local residents deserve a fair process, one that
allows for the difficult nature of networking in rural area.
Thank you,
Celeste Draisner

Saving Schreder Planetarium

The Shasta County Board of Education
met on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 in the Shasta County Office of
Education building on Magnolia Street in Redding. Although it was
not on the meeting agenda, several citizens attended the meeting to
express their desire to see Schreder Planetarium remain open after
a Facebook page titled Save
Redding's Planetarium indicated thousands of people were
potentially “interested” in attending the school board meeting. Although only about a half a dozen spoke at the
meeting, all expressed the opinion that a way should be found to
prevent the facility from closing. The Fantom Penguin had
the opportunity to speak to Nathan Fairchild, Manager of Schreder
Planetarium.
